Although auctions can occasionally bring unusual prices for certain rare timepieces, most watches sold at auction end up being purchased by dealers. When one factors in the 20% sales commission charged by most auction houses, the net sales price for most watches are often significantly below wholesale levels. In addition, auction houses typically do not pay their consignors until 30-45 days after the auction…that is, assuming the winning bidder pays promptly.
